Jessa Northam

A box of pieces.
A place to begin.

I'm Jessa Northam. I live in Exeter, keep too many interesting offcuts, and make mosaics at the end of the dining table.

Nothing useful
is quite
used up.

My first mosaic was a coaster made from the remains of a broken green dish. It was uneven, the gaps were too wide, and I was absurdly pleased with it. The dish had belonged to my kitchen for years; making something from it felt more satisfying than replacing it. I began saving the occasional fragment, and eventually the fragments acquired their own shelf.

I tend to notice colour while walking around Exeter: the green of a painted gate, a rusty drain cover, a pale wall after rain. I make quick notes rather than trying to reproduce the scene. Back at the table, those combinations become something smaller and more abstract. The projects here are all domestic in scale, made for my own rooms and measured against the objects already living there.

Working slowly suits me. I can spend an evening sorting pieces and finish without attaching a single one. The next day, an awkward shape might suddenly become the beginning of a pattern. This site is a record of that sort of progress: the finished work, the useful tests, and the decisions I would otherwise forget when the table needs clearing for dinner.
